Discovery Works conducts training workshops, provides volunteer support, and publishes a newsletter, web site, and listserv for the California Archaeological Site Stewardship Program (CASSP). CASSP is sponsored by the Society for California Archaeology. CASSP volunteers help protect archaeological and historical resources on public lands by making regular visits to assigned sites and reporting to the local archaeologists responsible for those sites. By identifying potential problems (from visitors or erosion and fire conditions) at an early stage, solutions can be implemented at lower cost and before cultural resources are lost. CASSP received the Governor's Historic Preservation Award in 2002.
